Still trying to figure it out!

Recently one of our youngsters asked me; just how old are you Mr. Phil. Well, I first chuckled, and then the more I thought about it within the context of our conversation it wasn’t a negative question, by the way I am 60! The conversation centered on just what is the will of God for us, and when will I figure it all out. I assured the youngster; even though I am “old” I still struggle with that question.

I have learned this is a question not learned early in life, but is something we will have to pursue all of our days.

I preached my first lesson about 40 years ago, but have only done it regularly for the past 22 years or so. I am not sure I have learned as much as I need to, but I have figured out a few principles that need to be continually focused on.

Walk with God. Being a Christian is much more than a religion, it is being in relationship with God. The best way I know to cultivate that is to spend much time in His Word, pray faithfully, and be seriously involved in a church family. When these things become part of your life, you are on your way figuring out what God’s will for you is.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says; Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. There have been many times in my life, instead of surrendering to God’s will I have said; “God, here is what I am planning to do, help me figure out how to get it done.” I am confident that’s not a good way to determine what God’s will is for me. Before God reveals His will to us, we must be committed to doing whatever it is that He desires for us to do. I often wonder if God is slow to show us His plan if He knows our agenda is really what we are focused on.

Paul writes in Romans we are to present ourselves as a living sacrifice. Jesus was willing to sacrifice His life for us; the only reasonable response is to offer Him “us” as a sacrifice. When we individually do this and together as a church do this, THAT’S when He will begin to direct our paths.

Obey what we already know. Many of us daily want to know what is His will for me, but we fail on following the things we already know! God’s word is very clear on much of what God’s will is for us all. Here’s what I mean, if we fail to do what we already know is His will, why in the world would He reveal any more about His will for us in our lives?

Surround yourself with Godly people. If you choose to surround yourself with godly people, they will be very instrumental in helping you figure out God’s will in your life. The opposite is also true, if you surround yourself with people who are far from God, your hope of finding His will for your life will be greatly diminished. Not impossible, but much tougher. Proverbs 11:14 says; Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

Jesus designed his church to help you tremendously with this. I encourage us all to be in church every time the doors are opened. The more you involve yourself with a family of believers, the greater your chances will be of finding godly men and women who can help you figure out God’s will for you.

I am sometimes not very smart, but Mr. Phil is still trying to figure it out……even though I am, at least in the eyes of one of us, OLD.

Have a great week. I love you all

Old Philip.
