You better not cry!

I love the memories family holidays and growing up on the farm in Kentucky. We always cut our own Christmas tree, usually picked out long before December 1st, as I rode the 45 minutes it took the old school bus to get home every day from Lynn Grove Elementary. At church not much was said about Christmas, because, we didn’t know if the 25th was His birthday, but at home we did Christmas! Santa, lights the whole meal deal!

I can’t help but wish we had talked more about the birth of Jesus and less about Santa at home and church.  We know Santa is a myth, but Jesus is not. I am afraid sometimes we treat them as if they are related. We all know the song, “you better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout I’m telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town.” It was fun, but we all know or will know, it’s not true, it’s a myth. The most important thing about Santa that bothers me is this, we tell our children about him, and it’s fictitious. The second is just about as important.

“He’s making a list, checking it twice, gonna find out who’s naughty or nice, Santa Claus is coming to town.” We know that God is all seeing, but Santa? This is where sometimes our theology gets skewed. If I understand Santa correctly, he rewards those who’ve been nice and doesn’t reward those who’ve been naughty. Jesus never operates that way. And for me, that’s a good thing. It’s easy to believe that God might operate like Santa, rewarding those who have done good and punishing those who are naughty! The problem with that is we have all been NAUGHTY! That simple truth means we would all be in big trouble, if God operated like Santa.

Jesus teaches if we do good things, to be seen by others, that’s our reward. Now don’t misunderstand, God wants us to do good things, not so we will be rewarded but that He will be praised! “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 5:16). In fact God has a lot of good things prepared by Him for us to do! “We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:10)

When I hear the song, “Santa Claus is coming to Town”, I’m going to think about the one who came to town over 2000 years ago. I praise God that His arrival means we will be rewarded, not because we aren’t naughty, but because He was  nice and perfect. If we come to Him in faith, allow Him to wash our sins away, we are adopted into God’s family and become heirs with Jesus to all the joys of heaven! See, it’s not a reward, but an inheritance! Now that’s a good reason you better not cry, you better not pout,‘ cause He came to town!                    Merry Christmas
