Where were you?

Where were you?

I think it happens for every generation at least once. For my parent’s generation it was December 7, for mine it seems to be September 11th. We will always remember where we were on that September morning 11 years ago. I think it’s a good question to ask. Where were you?

Today as I write this there are many gatherings planned to help us remember. We remember those who died, we remember those who rushed in to help the dying and how it cost them their lives. I remember where I was that morning. But I also know memory is a tricky thing. There are a lot of things that happened I don’t remember. And it’s not one of those anniversaries’ we want to celebrate, we just remember what happened in New York, Washington D.C. and some field in Pennsylvania. I will never forget those who lost so many loved ones on 9/11.

Tragedy has been part of human existence for a long time. We humans seem to be pretty good at that. Here is what I want to remember. Our God is pretty good, no He is real good at taking the tragedy we create and turning it around, and that’s something I will always remember. If you asked the disciples where they were when Jesus died, no doubt they could do that. I also have a confidence they would remember how God took that tragedy and turned it into the greatest victory mankind had ever known. I’m sure they could tell you where they were when He died. Lost and without hope. Ask Judas. But the more important question is where they were the next Sunday. The moment they surely will remember is where they were when they heard the good news that Jesus was alive. In fact it was so good they couldn’t believe their own ears! But it was true; God had taken human tragedy, human sin and turned it into VICTORY.

Now that’s worth remembering. I will never forget where I was when I heard and realized the good news! Luke 24:33, 34

They didn't waste a minute. They were up and on their way back to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and their friends gathered together, talking away: "It's really happened! The Master has been raised up—Simon saw him!" (msg)

Where were you when you heard?  Have a great week!        Philip
