I like new! Most of the time.

I really like new stuff, Leigh and I just got a new car. By my count it is the 4th brand new car I ever had! I really like new cars. Sometimes though I really like old stuff, you know the things that I have and will never get rid of as long as I am alive here.

God’s word calls on us to become new, over and over again. Usually when we talk about it we connect it with baptism and being born again as a new creature. Now that is certainly what happens when we are baptized but when Paul talks frequently about becoming a new creation he is speaking to folks who were baptized a while ago. In Colossians he writes, “But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” Paul is plainly talking here about Christians becoming “new” being a process. The goal is of course to become an image of our Creator! (Genesis 1)  He gives us great instruction on what is our responsibility in this ongoing process! First we clean up our mouths, we stop being angry, not to just stop saying angry hateful things, but to actually stop being hateful people! Now I will be the first to admit how hard that is to do. But God doesn’t leave us on our own, He sent His Spirit to act on our hearts, if we will only submit to Him. We with God’s help we take off and put on. “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. It’s my prayer this week; I continue to take off the old and continue to put on the new! I think I will like it. I love you all!             Philip

Phil Us Up!

Believe the Story

I was reminded by a friend of mine a story that I have known since I started going to Bible School many years ago. I can still learn some things from those old childhood stories. We all love the story of David and Goliath. The bravery of little David going out with just a sling and some stones and taking out the big evil Goliath! After David does that we read—“Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines.” I always admired the bravery of David and the “men of Israel”. But wait a minute, in the narrative of the story David has to go out and face the giant because “the men of Israel” were all scared to death! No one in the whole country could be found to take on the Philistine champion, except little David. I read a commentary that says this about 1st Samuel 17. “They shouted of a victory to which they had contributed nothing except six weeks of cowardice.”

Now wait a minute, these cowards still experienced victory over the Philistine but only by getting behind God’s chosen one, David. Victory was theirs! I can just see the men of Israel, “come on guys, we got em on the run now!” The whole nation celebrated because victory was theirs.

Same story, second verse for us, Satan comes, shouts threats, and we are scared. The young man, Jesus shows up, and says I’ll take him on. Jesus wins, Satan loses, we shout victory as if we have won, and we have because we are in Christ, buried with him in baptism. He fought, we won. Now I have to believe the story!  Have a great week! philip
